This weekend my nephew turned the ripe old age of 4 years old. And in grand fashion, my sister-in-law planned the most awesome birthday party for him. One that any self-respecting game geek would appreciate it. When my nephew requested a Mario party, most people would conjure up your standard ribbons and streamers.
But not my sister-in-law. Upon entering their house, the first thing I saw was this:
I think it’s important to point out that everything in the following pictures was made from scratch by my sister-in-law and my niece. If you’ve read my other site, you might have remembered this post where they planned an “Election Dinner” where we voted on the food we would eat that night. http://www.qqpewpew.com/2008/11/the-election-dinner/ They know how to throw parties. :)
Of course, any birthday party needs cake. And we were not disappointed.
Not being content with delicious baked goods, they also created Mario and Luigi hats for all the boys, and Princess crowns for all the girls.
I might be slightly biased but I am fairly convinced my boy is the cutest Luigi to ever roam the planet.
This is my other nephew wearing his rocking Toad hat.
They planned an obstacle course for the kids to run through three Mario-esque levels. My nephew’s dad and other uncle were “Bowser” and kidnapped the Princess (my niece) and the kids had to make their way through all the levels to rescue her.
The first level involved them climbing through a bunch of tunnels and then stomping on all the Goombas!
After they all touched the flag at the end of the level, we proceeded to the level with lots of pipes and the underwater level. Each kid had to jump over the pipes without knocking them over. If they did, they started the level over. They then had to run through the water level, which consisted of all the other adults at the party blowing bubbles and tossing beanbag Cheep-cheeps at them.
After finishing the 2nd level, the third and final level involved them crossing the “treacherous” balance beams. Unlucky for them, the Bowsers were armed with fireballs (plastic ball pit balls) and were trying to knock them off the balance beams.
Once all the kids were able to make it across the beams, they found a block they could smash so they could all get their own fireflowers (even more ball pit balls) to take down the Bowsers and rescue the Princess!
After they saved the Princess, they learned of one more challenge. There was treasure for them but it was eaten by the Chain Chomp!
Luckily our brave adventurers were more than equipped to retrieve their prizes!
I had the illustrious job of running the MP3 player to play the level appropriate music for each section of the obstacle course and the victory music once all the kids reached the flag for the level.
I missed pictures of the Question Mark block and the kids fighting Bowser(s) since I was running the music, but if I get them from some of the other attending adults, I will add them to the post.
All in all, a birthday party any child should be jealous of. :D
Addition: The Party Invitation

These are the kind of parties my mom would throw when I was his age as well.
Just got kind of nostalgia'd and it sucks man, I want those days back.
heard that
This party is amazing. Everything was well planned and theme related. Im so jelous of his parents.
This post made a guy who has his last college class today realize 3 things….
1) I grew up way too fast.
2) This would make an awesome idea for a grown up party (with age- appropriate adjustments, of course, such as different challenges and prizes)
3) This is the type of parent I want to be
This is just good parenting. Its rare that parents actually care enough to put the time into a childs birthday. Those kids will remember that forever.
I'm so doing this for my birthday party this year. My 19th birthday party.
This is the best birthday ever, I have to do this next year.
Cool party
I'm just repeating what everyone else is saying, but that is ridiculously cool.
I wish I was a kid again so i could have a birthday party like this… *repeat all previous comments*
now that i've seen this, i realize my life thus far has been devoid of meaning and purpose. I must have this!
I want this for my 21st this year
Best. Thing. EVER!
This kind of party could also easily be done for Legend of Zelda or another favorite classic NES game. Final Fantasy for teens. Truly great ideas are those that inspire, therefore this party more than qualifies.
By far the best children's party I ever witness… and probably will ever witness… What a treat! A great way to pay a homage to a classic!
Why were my parties never this awesome?
this is AMAZING!
Will your sister in law adopt me?

Charming. I can see the love and work that has gone into this project. Too bad most of the kids don't know who Mario is.

i want to be at this party so bad…
Super cute and creative party!! I wish I were invited. ^.^
This is the most creative Super Mario party I've ever seen. From the top, I thought it's already amazing with the Mario costumes and the elaborate cake (I imagine it took much time to do). But then I saw the Goombas and the game you guys played, it looked so much fun. And I do agree, your boy is really the cutest Luigi. :)
i wish my parents love me this much!
im 34 and i want that party
im totaly copying this idea
Awww that's wonderful
I wish I could turned back 25 years from now
I think I need to make this party happen for my boyfriend's 28th birthday in August. He would LOVE it. (And, for a bit of perspective, he's graduating from medical school this weekend. If throwing a Mario Party for a 28-year-old MD is wrong, then I don't want to be right.)
this party is so creative and true to form…i love it :) quite possibly the coolest party i've ever heard of…of course i'm a huge nintendo buff
what the Dinowarz?
Absolutely LOVE IT!!! Brilliant Job :)
this is the best party theme ever!!
What an awesome idea! I wish I was as talented as your SIL!
Awesome! Mario will never get old :)
I'm 25..and I'm EFFIN JEALOUS!!! D:
GREAT idea!!!!! I remember the 8-bit games! When I got my first Nintendo, the game that came with was Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo. Best game ever, how could it not be the best party idea?
absolutely awesome!
Amazing if they were snapping like this floribots video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3OVF22rHJ8
That is the nicest thing a human can do for their kids.
Your sister is amazing!
